How to Restore Files from the Recycle Bin

Restoring files from the Recycle Bin is a straightforward process. Follow these steps to recover your deleted files:

Open the Recycle Bin:

Click on the Recycle Bin icon located on your desktop or type “Recycle Bin” in the Start menu search bar.

Browse the Recycle Bin:

In the Recycle Bin window, you’ll see a list of files and folders that have been deleted but not permanently erased. You can sort or search for the files you’re looking for by name, date, or type.

Select the Files to Restore:

To restore a file, right-click on it and select Restore from the context menu. Alternatively, you can select multiple files by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking each file, and then right-click and choose Restore.

Check the File’s Original Location:

The file will be restored to its original location on your computer. For example, if you deleted a file from the Documents folder, it will return to that folder. If you deleted a file from the desktop, it will be restored there.

Confirm the Restoration:

Once the process is complete, open the folder where the file was originally located to ensure the file has been successfully restored.

Troubleshooting When Files Are Not in the Recycle Bin

There are situations where files you need to restore may not be in the Recycle Bin. This can happen for several reasons:

The Recycle Bin Was Already Emptied:

If you or a program automatically emptied the Recycle Bin, the files would have been permanently deleted from the system. In this case, recovery is more challenging, but not impossible, depending on your next steps.

Files Deleted with Shift + Delete:

Files deleted using the Shift + Delete keyboard shortcut bypass the Recycle Bin altogether, meaning they are not temporarily stored there. This is useful when you want to delete a file permanently but also means there’s no easy way to recover it from the Bin.

The Recycle Bin is Corrupted:

Open Command Prompt as an administrator (search for “cmd” and right-click to run as administrator).

Type the following command and press Enter:

rd /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin

This command deletes the Recycle Bin and its contents, forcing Windows to recreate it. After this, try restoring your files again.

The File Is Too Large for the Recycle Bin:

If a file is too large to fit into the Recycle Bin, Windows will skip moving it there and permanently delete it. This can happen with large video or database files, for example.

How to Recover Permanently Deleted Files
