NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) drives have revolutionized storage by providing significantly faster read and write speeds compared to traditional SATA SSDs. These drives connect via the PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) interface and are typically used in modern PCs, laptops, and gaming systems.
1. Prepare for Formatting
Before proceeding with formatting your NVMe drive, it’s important to back up any data you wish to keep. Formatting will erase all data on the drive, so ensure that you have copied files to a secure location, like another drive or cloud storage.

Check System Compatibility
Ensure NVMe support: Ensure that your motherboard supports NVMe drives. Most modern motherboards with an M.2 slot support NVMe SSDs, but it’s always a good idea to check your motherboard’s specifications.
NVMe driver: Windows 10 typically comes with built-in drivers for NVMe drives, but if you encounter issues, you may need to download the latest NVMe drivers from your drive manufacturer’s website.
Backup Important Data
As a precaution, back up any important files from your NVMe drive before proceeding with the format. Once the drive is formatted, the data cannot be recovered without specialized software.
2. Open Disk Management
Windows 10 provides a built-in tool called Disk Management that allows you to manage storage devices, including formatting drives, creating partitions, and assigning drive letters.
Steps to Access Disk Management:
Right-click the Start menu (Windows logo) and select Disk Management from the context menu.
Alternatively, press Win + X and select Disk Management from the list that appears.
In Disk Management, you should see a list of all connected drives, including your NVMe drive. If the NVMe drive is new, it will be listed as “Unallocated,” meaning it hasn’t been formatted or partitioned yet.
3. Identify the NVMe Drive
In Disk Management, carefully identify the NVMe drive. Be sure to select the correct drive, as formatting will erase all data on the selected drive.
How to identify your NVMe drive:
Look for the unallocated space or the size of the drive (for example, a 500GB NVMe drive).
If you have multiple drives connected, check the Disk 0. Disk 1. etc., labels to match the correct drive.
You can also check the model and make of the drive under the “Volume” column in Disk Management.
4. Format the NVMe Drive Using Disk Management
Once you’ve identified the drive to format, follow these steps to format the NVMe drive:
Step-by-Step Process:
Right-click on the NVMe drive in Disk Management (usually labeled as Disk X, where X is a number).
From the context menu, choose New Simple Volume.
This will open the New Simple Volume Wizard. Click Next.
Specify the volume size: You can choose to use the full size of the NVMe drive or create partitions if you prefer. In most cases, you’ll use the entire drive, so select the default size (usually the full capacity of the drive).
Assign a drive letter: Choose a letter for the drive. Windows will assign one by default, but you can change it if needed.
Choose the file system: Select NTFS (recommended for Windows) as the file system. If you need to use the drive on other operating systems (like macOS or Linux), you might consider exFAT.
Perform a quick format: You can opt for a quick format, which will erase the files but not check for bad sectors, or uncheck it to perform a full format (more thorough but slower). For most users, the quick format is sufficient.
Click Next, then Finish.
The formatting process will begin, and once completed, your NVMe drive will be ready to use. The drive will appear under This PC in File Explorer, and you can start using it for storage, gaming, or installing applications.
5. Formatting the NVMe Drive via Command Prompt (Advanced Method)
If you prefer to use a command-line tool or need to perform more advanced formatting options, you can use Diskpart, a built-in Windows utility that allows you to manage disks.
Using Diskpart to Format:
Press Win + X and select Command Prompt (Admin) to open an elevated Command Prompt with administrative rights.
Type the following commands one at a time, pressing Enter after each:
bash
diskpart list disk
This will list all available disks. Identify the disk number of your NVMe drive.
bash
select disk X
Replace X with the disk number of your NVMe drive.
bash
clean
The clean command will remove all partitions and data from the drive.
bash
create partition primary
This command creates a primary partition on the NVMe drive.
bash
format fs=ntfs quick
This command will format the drive with the NTFS file system. You can replace ntfs with exFAT if you need a different file system.
bash
assign letter=X
Replace X with the drive letter you want to assign to the NVMe drive.
Once the process is complete, type exit to close Diskpart.
6. Formatting the NVMe Drive in BIOS/UEFI
If the NVMe drive is not appearing in Windows, it might need to be initialized in the BIOS/UEFI firmware before it can be recognized by Windows 10.
Steps to Format in BIOS/UEFI:
Restart your computer and press the appropriate key (usually Del or F2) to enter the BIOS/UEFI.
Navigate to the Boot or Storage tab to ensure the NVMe drive is detected.
If you don’t see the drive, ensure it’s properly seated in the M.2 slot and that the motherboard has NVMe support enabled.
Save the changes and exit BIOS/UEFI.
Once Windows loads, use Disk Management or Diskpart as described earlier to format the drive.
7. Troubleshooting Common Formatting Issues
Sometimes, you might encounter issues when formatting your NVMe drive. Here are a few common problems and solutions:
Drive Not Showing in Disk Management
Ensure that the drive is properly connected and that your motherboard supports NVMe drives.
Check for driver issues and install the latest NVMe drivers from the manufacturer.
Drive Not Initializing
If you see the drive listed as Not Initialized in Disk Management, right-click on the drive and choose Initialize Disk. Choose the appropriate partition style (GPT for drives over 2TB or MBR for drives under 2TB).
Slow Formatting
If the formatting process is slow, try disabling any third-party software that may be interfering with the disk, or use a full format rather than a quick format.
8. Post-Formatting Steps
After the NVMe drive has been formatted, there are a few additional steps you may want to take:
Optimize the drive for performance: Use the Optimize Drives tool in Windows to ensure the NVMe drive is running at peak performance. This tool can be found by typing “Defragment and Optimize Drives” in the Start menu.
Install Software: Now that your drive is formatted, you can use it for storing files, installing applications, or setting it up as your primary drive for Windows.
