Formatting a USB drive to NTFS (New Technology File System) can be done through several methods.
1. Using Windows Disk Management
Connect the USB drive: Plug your USB drive into an available USB port on your computer.
Open Disk Management:
Press the Windows key + X and select “Disk Management” from the menu.
In the Disk Management window, you’ll see a list of all the disks and partitions on your computer. Locate your USB drive. It’s usually labeled with its capacity and a drive letter (e.g., E:, F:).
Delete existing partitions (if any):
Right – click on the partition of the USB drive you want to format and select “Delete Volume.” Warning: This will erase all data on the partition. Make sure you have backed up any important files.
After deleting the volume, the space on the USB drive will be shown as “Unallocated.”
Create a new NTFS partition:
Right – click on the unallocated space and select “New Simple Volume.”
The New Simple Volume Wizard will open. Click “Next.”
You can specify the size of the partition. By default, it will use all the available space. Click “Next.”
Assign a drive letter or use the default one provided. Click “Next.”
In the “Format Partition” step, select “NTFS” as the file system. You can also choose the allocation unit size (the default is usually fine for most cases) and give a volume label if you want. Check the “Perform a quick format” box if you want a faster formatting process. However, if you suspect the drive has errors, it’s better to uncheck this box to perform a full format that will also check for bad sectors. Click “Next” and then “Finish.” The drive will now be formatted to NTFS.
2. Using Command Prompt (CMD)
Connect the USB drive: As before, make sure the USB drive is properly inserted into the computer.
Open Command Prompt:
Press the Windows key, type “cmd,” and press Enter.
You need to identify the disk number of your USB drive. Type “diskpart” and press Enter to open the DiskPart utility.
In DiskPart, type “list disk” and press Enter. This will show you a list of all the disks connected to your computer. Identify your USB drive based on its size and other details. Note the disk number (e.g., Disk 1).
Clean the disk (optional but recommended if re – partitioning):
Type “select disk [disk number]” (replace [disk number] with the actual disk number you noted earlier). Press Enter.
Then type “clean” and press Enter. This will erase all the partition information on the disk.
Create a partition and format as NTFS:
Type “create partition primary” and press Enter to create a primary partition on the USB drive.
Then type “select partition 1” (assuming you only have one partition on the drive; if you have more, adjust the partition number accordingly). Press Enter.
To format the partition as NTFS, type “format fs = ntfs quick” (if you want a quick format). If you want a full format that checks for bad sectors, type “format fs = ntfs”. Press Enter. The drive will be formatted to NTFS.
